The
Beginning…
The bungy legend was born after AJ saw a video of
bungy jumps performed by the Oxford University Dangerous
Sports Club, based on a harvest ritual in the Vanuatu
Island Group where young men climbed to the top of
towers, tied vines to their feet and flung themselves
earthwards.

Realising
that others would love to experience
that adrenaline rush, AJ and business
partner Henry van Asch, whom he met
skiing in Wanaka, New Zealand, set
about developing and testing bungy
cords with the help of Auckland University
scientists.
In June 1987, AJ's jump from the Eiffel
Tower in Paris was a very public confirmation
of complete faith in the bungy product
-- and a PR coup. Despite the skeptics
who thought it was a tourism operation
that would never 'catch on', the company
opened for business at the Kawarau
Bridge, Queenstown, New Zealand, with
just a 30-day operating license from
the Department of Conservation.
AJ
Hackett and Henry van Asch knew they
had a safe product but in order to
convince the tourism industry and
the public, they needed an independent
method of safety assurance. AJ and
Henry developed a Bungy Code of Practice,
which provided the framework for the
New Zealand / Australian Bungy Jump
Standard -- the company was the first
in the world to be awarded the 'S'
Mark for bungy jumping. Every six
months the Standards Association of
New Zealand completes an independent
audit of the jump sites.

In
1997, AJ Hackett & Henry van Asch
decided to go their separate ways &
now run independently of each other. Henry
owns & operates Bungy sites in New
Zealand. AJ owns & operates other
existing Bungy sites around the Globe.
The split was amicable & both parties
continue to work together in areas of
safety & customer satisfaction. |

Safety…
| As
pioneers and market leaders in adventure tourism,
AJ Hackett Bungy established the "Code of
Practice" for bungy jumping in 1989. Now
15 years later, bungy companies around the world
all operate in accordance with the New Zealand
"Code of Practice".
In 1992 AJ Hackett Bungy was first awarded the
"S" mark by Standards NZ. In order to
maintain our "S" mark we are audited
every 6 months by international auditors; Bureau
Veritas. They look into many facets of our operation
including safety, training, equipment use, recording
of procedures and compliance with the code.
Requirements to become a jump operator with AJ
Hackett Bungy are a minimum of bronze medallion
lifesaving certificate, current first aid certificate,
rope and climbing skills as well as previous experience
within tourism.
In order to become a standards registered Jump
Master it takes 2 years of on site training, as
well as an advanced rope skills course, and pre
hospital care course both external to our training
program. The final hurdle for prospective Jump
Masters involves a practical assessment and a
written exam conducted by representatives from
the bungy industry external to our company. On
every day at all of our sites there is at least
one registered Jump Master overseeing all jump
preparations.
